Ships (Recreational Vehicles) that Pass in the Night (on the Interstate)

As we travel I occupy my time by calculating gas mileage, locating campgrounds for future stops, finding fuel stops and checking accessibility on satellite views, making notes in a journal about where we just stayed and occasionally writing and posting a campground review online. I use the Internet to look up places mentioned on signs, manufacturing plants we pass to see what they make, and sights to see that we aren’t stopping to see, and report the information I find to the driver. I also check maps for traffic information and the weather. And of course, I check email and social media to catch up on friends and what they are doing.

Our travels over the past 4 1/2 years have put us in the position to meet people from all over the world. Sometimes the meeting is a brief conversation about where folks are from, where they are going and how do they like their rig. Other meetings involve stories told while enjoying a glass of wine, and perhaps dinner. And some encounters involve traveling together that promotes friendships that endure. Facebook gives all of us the opportunity to see where some of our friends are, or where they are heading.

As we turned our wheels to the east I noticed that friends of ours were in Amarillo for the week on their trek home to California. They were leaving Amarillo on Friday and were planning to spend the week in Albuquerque. They were staying at the same RV resort where we were planning to stay. We had reservations for Thursday, and would leave for Amarillo on Friday. We would be ships that pass in the night... Or RV’s that pass on the Interstate. We could wave to each other! Since we aren’t in a huge hurry to get across the country, and knowing we still have a long way to go and taking breaks is what we said we would do, we added another night’s stay in Albuquerque so we could have a brief visit with Bill and Denise. And visit, we did. We talked, and drank, and had yummy food at the 66 Diner. The ladies had a show and tell; Denise showed the projects she has been knitting while on the road, and I showed the quilts I had on board. We laughed that one can not have enough yarn or fat quarters. The guys talked shop. They talked about brakes and driving in the wind, and fueling up and acceleration. The next morning we had breakfast, shared hugs and good-byes, and “see ya down the road!”

Those planned encounters happen, whether the planning happens weeks or months out... or a day in advance. But we have also had serendipitous encounters where we just happen upon someone. We have bumped into friends at campgrounds, rest areas and while driving along the road. While we were in Albuquerque it happened again. We had a blown headlight so proceeded to Camping World to get a new bulb. While waiting in line the lady at the next register looked very familiar. When she talked I knew it! There was Nancy, a woman we traveled with on a west coast tour two years ago. Nancy was on a Route 66 RV tour. We joined the group’s happy hour and had fun meeting more people and catching up with Nancy.

Such is the fun of RV traveling.

Playing Leap Frog

As we were driving along I-10 in Arizona we played “Leap Frog” with another motorhome. We passed them. They passed us. We passed them, again.

Having been occupied with driving and navigating... well, having not paid attention to the driver or passenger... with each ‘contact’ we Dreamers began speculating about the owners of the motorhome, putting pieces of evidence together: the model of motorhome, the colors of the RV and the car, the brand of the car being towed, and the license plate showing where the coach came from.

Considering all of the millions of motorhomes on the road, what are the probabilities of running into someone you know along an Interstate highway?!

Imagine our fun in discovering that friends we met last year were heading the same way we were, and that within a week we would both be at the same campground! We were parked next to the Hehr's at the service center last year, and then ended up at the same resort in Arizona.

Once we realized who we were playing leap frog with... and they realized who we were... we had a round of emails sharing phone numbers, and then chatted for a bit. We are looking forward to seeing them at the campground soon.

Sister From Another Mister

Have you ever met someone, and almost instantaneously known that that particular person is special and is destined to become your best friend? A few times in my life that has happened... and those women are still my best friends.

Marjie & Dreaming in Estes Park a few years ago

Today I am hopping on a plane to visit Marjie. We met at a preschool parent meeting when our oldest children were 3. I was pregnant with my youngest, and she had her youngest in her arms. For many years we had all kinds of adventures, and often shared 'mom' duties with each other's children.

Due to family circumstances, like needing a job to live, Marjie and her family moved away 15 years ago. Since then we have been able to see each other ever year or two. And, of course, when we get together, after the initial hug and the first flurry of words, we settle into doing things together as if we had never been apart.

I am meeting Marjie in Kansas City. We will attend the opera at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, where Katie, the baby who was in Marjie's arms when we first met, will be playing the part of a wicked stepsister in Cendrillon (Cinderella). We will enjoy the show. It will be wonderful to see Katie all grown up. We will talk, and reminisce, and babble into the wee hours of the morning. We'll laugh, and probably cry. We'll pack a few years into a few days and return to our own lives with a bit of a lift, and a few more memories.

How about you? Do you have far-away friends like this? Do you, like me, kinda feel this way about many of your blog friends? How wonderful that we can 'meet' through the magic of the Internet and form bonds that could endure throughout our lives!

This Week on "Me"

I feel so out of touch. We have not been at a campground that has had WiFi, or any other form of Internet connection for that matter, for a looonnnnggggg time! I haven't been able to read any blogs and I haven't been able to post to my blog.  So, in the manner of "Glee"....

Here's what you missed on "Living a Dream":

The Dreamers leave Florida and Mr. Dreamy's family after a wonderful family dinner, where the matriarch (Mr. Dreamy's mother) agrees to dinner out, despite the shiner she is sporting from a tumble a few nights before, which resulted in a trip to the hospital and some glue and steri-strips to put her back together again. The Dreamers enjoy drinks and dinner near Savannah with a delightful young man who used to play with their son when they were young children and find it entertaining that while the friend seems all grown up, their son will forever be their 'boy'! The Dreamers visit their hometown of 30+ years, which they haven't seen for a while. They gawk at all of the changes and growth and agree that although they miss some things about 'home' they don't miss all of the hustle and bustle and bigness. Dreaming bakes a cake, successfully, in the convection microwave and invites lots of friends  to come by for "Coffee @ the Coach".  The Dreamers go out to lunch with other friends, Dreaming takes a walk with her former walking buddy and another friend comes for breakfast. The fuzzy family members work hard at camping.  The 'coach' gets buttoned up and begins the trek west and the Dreamers discover that although "Hot-lanta" may be big on Braves baseball game, burgers at the Varsity, Coca Cola, CNN, the Martin Luther King Center and the home of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, it is not big on camping! Our campground choices were very limited.

And, that's what you missed!

We are heading to Red Bay, AL for some warranty repairs and service. From there? Who knows! We'll have to see how the wind blows!

A Post in Appreciation

I write my blog for me. I don't know why I feel like I should spew out mundane things. Perhaps it is because of that English teacher who said I couldn't write. Maybe I'm still trying to make a point. But I also enjoy getting feedback from friends and followers - well, maybe because they are positive and not like that English teacher! (Yes, he really did say that. And, 40 years later, when I saw him at my HS reunion, my stomach still did flip-flops and turned inside out!) It has been so interesting to meet people through my blogging. I love that I have friends, many most of whom I have never met, but I feel like I know them and that they know me! Thank you, all, for checking out what I have to say now and then, and for letting me know your thoughts. Thank you, also, for not pointing out errors in grammar or punctuation, or spelling!!!

I noticed I have new followers and would like to thank them for stopping by and caring to read my posts.

Thank you, Laurie! Laurie is a new face-to-face friend. We met over horse poop; outside, in the paddock, picking up after horses. What an amazing world it is as we discovered how many things we have in common.

Mary is also a new follower. She bumped into me while chatting on the farmhouse porch ;-)  Another blogger, Patrice at Everyday Rurality, has a weekly link-up where bloggers can respond to questions and link them to Patrice's site. Then, bloggers can read other's responses to the questions. It is almost like visiting one another. Mary writes Visits with Mary, and Waiting at the Gate.

From Mary's header - this sure reminds me of the south!

Another new follower is Mimi Foxmorton. I love her name! Mimi is so inspirational. She is very artistic - something I aspire to be! She writes a number of blogs and shares so much beauty in them. One is called Sea Gypsy and another is called Collage Pirate. I'll create a bit of mystery here by suggesting you visit one of Mimi's sites and then travel to others that I haven't listed!

Found on Mimi's header for Collage Pirate

My latest follower is Alica. She pens Happily Married... to the Cows. I have a fascination with dairy cows, well, to be honest, I guess with all cows. Perhaps that fascination has its roots in my visits to my grandfather's ranch as a young girl, or maybe it is just that I've wondered how cows can lick their own noses! Whatever, I totally admire dairy farmers and the twice, daily work they do to bring us fresh milk and milk products! Alica also lives in Lancaster, PA and reports that she is from a long line of Mennonites. The Amish and the Mennonites also are a fascination of mine. I love nothing more than visiting Amish areas and talking with a few Amish I have gotten to know through my horses.

Header for Alica's Blog

I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday. It is time for me to get to work! I have so many things to do to get ready for the holidays! How about you? Are you feeling the stress already?!

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch: Terrific Trips

Patrice has some great questions for discussion on the farmhouse porch this week. I have to admire her... she hosted a week-long cyber party last week, and is back at it again! I hope you can join us. You can answer the questions on your blog and link to Everyday Rurality, or answer in a comment on my blog or on her's.

  1. Do you have any special plans for this fall?
  2. Do you collect anything?
  3. Have you done any canning or freezing this season?
  4. Do you have a friend who lives far away? Where do they live?
  5. When in a store, restaurant, or other business, do you ever complain or praise to the management?
1. Special plans for this fall.... Oh, I can't wait to answer that question. My plans will knock your socks off! I'm feeling like I won one of those prizes on a game show... you know, you win the beach chairs and suddenly there is a trip to an exotic beach, and another trip to someplace else and so forth. So our trip of a lifetime will begin with a trip to Rochester, NY. Even though it is not a high school reunion year, my class of 28 seniors learned that we have lost two of the 'boys' in our class this past spring. The recognition of our mortality was shocking to several of us. So, we decided, what the heck... we'd have a reunion regardless of whether it was a 5-year anniversary of our graduation or not. So far almost half the class has committed to returning to the scene of the crime. Then, since we are on the east coast... and 'close' to hubby's family, we'll scoot down to Florida to visit with them. Then we'll head a bit further south and embark on a cruise through the Panama Canal to celebrate 40 years of marriage. We finish that cruise in San Diego - pop up to San Francisco to see our son for a few days, and finally head home to Colorado. Didn't I tell you that it would be wild and crazy?!!

2. Do I collect anything? I am not a serious collector of anything. However, I have a few things that could be considered minor collections that I add to now and then. My most recent acquisition is a wrought iron candle sconce that I found at a consignment store on our trip to Idaho. I have a few varied sconces in my dining room and have thought it would be great fun to add to that so I can have unusual sconces throughout the dining room. We also have some unusual gas and candle lamps on top of our book shelves in the living room.

3. Nope - I haven't done any canning this year. I did help my brother and SIL pick huckleberries today. We have about a quart - and plan to have huckleberry pancakes and huckleberry sauce the day after tomorrow.

4. A friend who lives far away? You bet! Lots of them. My 'adult' BFF lives near Detroit, MI. We try to arrange at trip once a year where one of us will come visit the other for about a week. Our hubby's go along with it - although I'm not sure they 'get it'! My BFF from High School lives in San Francisco. We have had a few opportunities to get together and we really enjoy seeing each other and reliving our youth in stories we tell... for hours on end! I have a lot of friends with whom I used to work who live in the east. I'm hoping to get back there - maybe during my trip in October, to have lunch with the bunch of them. Then... there are my cyber friends. They live far, far away... in a place called "Internet". But, we get to communicate with each other all of the time!

5. Complain or compliment management? I try not to complain - but on occasion I will take management aside and let them know about my displeasure. I do try, on the other hand, to let folks know when I am pleased and think they have done a good job. I feel that too often folks never know when what they have done is appreciated - so if I can share that with them... I'm thinking it will make their day!

New!

Hey, look what I got....

New blogger friends!

Welcome to my blog! I am so glad that you stopped by and clicked the 'Follow' button. I love meeting new people through blogging. Having new friends is just like having lots of packages filled with interesting things to discover. I really enjoy learning more about your worlds!  I love hearing from you!

You may want to visit my new friends, too. Here is a bit of information about them:

Honey writes Stories to Share. She lives in my former home state of South Carolina with her husband and two girls. Honey is a writer and aspires to get paid for doing what she loves!

Cathy writes Cathy Kennedy's Blog and has published a children's book. She promotes literacy for kids - I'm and advocate for that as well.

EmptyNester writes two blogs, Empty Nest and One Flew Over the Empty Nest where she talks about her hobby of bird watching. Empty Nest also lives in my former home state of South Carolina. Her four girls have all grown and left home. I can identify with that, having had my blogs fledge a few years ago.

4R Ranch writes a blog of that name. 4R visited my Blog Hop and shared many pictures of her sister and her horses. I hope she 'hops on board' some more!

AnnMarie writes Momto8blog. Although some of her children have fledged, she still has more at home than I ever had. I just can't imagine it! She also has, at last count, 1731 followers. Ann Marie aspires to be a writer and is building a network of friends through her blog.

Achieve1dream writes One Friesian Sporthorse, One Percheron and One Donkey. She also writes Living A Farmer's Life.  I met Achieve through the Hobby Horse Blog Hop, which I will put up later today. I also think it's neat that we both 'Dream'!

It is a sunny day out. The temperatures are warming back up to 'spring tease' temps. I can't wait to get out and 'do' something! Have a wonderful day!

Food for Thought

Friends are the most important ingredient in this recipe of life.

Thanks to all my friends for adding flavor to my life!
You make me smile :-)
You make me cry :(
You add spice to my day!

I have some new blog friends I'd like to introduce!

Allison writes Adventures with Shyloh. Shyloh is a Haflinger - so you know I already have that connection with Allison. Shyloh sometimes writes on Allison's blog - Doc & Pippin have already taken note of another mare in the blogger world!

To Catch a Pony is one of Antonia's sites. Antonia rides in Glasgow and creates beautiful art - using horses as her subjects. She tells about her riding and shares some of her art on her blog. She has another web site that shows more of her art work. I am impressed (if you've followed my blog for even the last week you've seen my attempt at art!!)

Another of my new blogger friends taught me a new word! Euthymic is from the Philippines. I learned that euthymic is being a state of mind that is neither depressed, nor overly excited! How cool to find friends in such far places, and still be able to connect so easily! Mona and Ed are both free lance writers. It sounds like they have had many opportunities to write in different arenas.

Sherry writes Russ-stickacres. She and her husband live a life I envy. They farm 40 acres and live a simple life in norther Michigan. In many ways her life reminds me of Thoreau's experience at Walden pond.

That Special Friend...

Years ago my son started attending a new preschool. We had a fundraiser for the school, and I ended up meeting and working next to a very nice mom. While we were working, I began to have a feeling that we had some sort of connection, a connection that went deeper than most. Practically overnight we became best friends. Our kids grew up together, spending untold nights at each other's houses. We worked and partied together. We laughed and cried together. We went on trips and went shopping together. My friend moved away 13 years ago - but we have continued to keep in touch and visit when we can. We laughingly blame my friend for our having bought our project house! I was visiting her last year and my hubby was bored. So, he poked around on the Internet and found this house! Well, now my friend wants to see 'her' house, so she is flying in for a visit in two weeks. We'll have long coffee chats in the mornings. We'll go on adventures. We'll sit down and sew - she said she wants to help me make some curtains for 'her' house. We will pick up where we left off without a hiccup - friends do that!

Do you have a life-long friend too? Do you have a friend whose heart is bound to yours by strong, deep ties?

Welcome Friends

One of my blog friends posted about why she writes her blog. From the comments she received it seems that most bloggers feel that they are writing for themselves. They say their blog gives them a chance to organize their thoughts and 'publish' them. But, if we write for 'ourselves' then why are we spending the time to put it all out there? Wouldn't a spiral notebook work just as well?! Personally, it's more complicated than that. Yes, I write what I want to write and when I want to write it. I enjoy playing with words. I kick myself when I post something and then realize I could have made it better by doing X, Y or Z. Mr. Lasser's words still echo in my mind - he is a constant critic, I always feel him looking at the screen over my shoulder (how rude) and he has probably never read one single post! He was my high school English teacher....a long time ago! But, I digress. I wouldn't go so far as to say that I write for you, my followers. But, followers are important  part of the equation. It is nice to get to know you as a group of friends, critics, supporters, etc. So, thank you for following. Thank you for taking some time to consider and comment on what I may have said. Welcome to my blog. I am so glad to have met you through the blogosphere.

Recent followers of my blog include:
  •  Niecey from Brawner's in Bend. I welcomed her, sort of, last week, but had the wrong name. (Or...did she change her name?!) Niecey is evolving into a country girl. Hooray for country girls!
  • Heritage Farm Village has become a follower. How wonderful to have an entire village following my blog! ;-)
  • Jane from Me 'n my Monkeys, all the way from Australia. How cool that we can connect so easily using the marvelous, magical, magnificent Internet!
  • Farmers Wifey. What I love about FW is that even though she, too, is on the other side of the world, we have so much in common: she's building a new house, which she refers to as the 'Money Pit' (I can identify with that!), she is fighting the dreaded enemy, The Blogger Butt, and she is a miscarriage survivor.
  • Cat is another country girl, and just the title of her blog invites readers to see what is going on in her life. She is at Crap on my shoes, egg in my pocket (and yarn on the needles).
  • Lori writes several blogs (I can hardly keep up with one) and one can be found at The Skoog Farm Journal. Like me, Lori is a retired teacher. She has horses and she lives close to where I grew up in western New York.
  • Leontien writes two blogs.  Her blogs include Four Leaf Clover Tales and Little Miss Bookwurm. She must be a kindred soul as she enjoys country living and books. A great combination!
  • Another follower from Farm Friend Friday who I'd like to welcome is "Go West" Feral Woman, with a blog of that title. I think there is a bit of 'feral' woman in all of us! FW takes some awesome photographs.
  • Gail also has two blogs. How do these folks manage more than one?! She writes Familiar Spirits and At the Farm. I think Gail, like me, loves alliteration. She describes her blog as: "tale of tails, tedium, tenacity and how I react to each day, each duty, and each danger." Love it!
  • Kim writes about Life in a Little Red Farmhouse. Her family recently designed and had the house built to look like an old farmhouse. It even has 'add ons', as if they expanded the house over the years.
  • Heidi writes Vansteaders - as in homesteading and traveling in a van. She and her husband do both. They write about their adventures on the farm and on the road at the Vansteaders blog as well as at  Vantramps.
  • Pattie has also begun to follow my site, but I don't have a blog address for her. She loves rescuing animals...all kinds. Not only does she rehab animals, but she rehabs junk and loves working with architectural salvage.

Rainbow of Colors

Who doesn't like a new box of crayons?  Those prefect, shiny points; That distinct, memorable crayon smell! A side note: schools, teache...
