I have been having back and hip pain for over two months. Truth be told, I've been experiencing problems with my back for many years. But this more recent episode began with sciatica, and it morphed. That's one thing I've noticed over the years, the unpleasant sensations I experience as a result of stenosis and other arthritis issues with my back change. Sometimes the back of my legs tingle, all the way down. Other times the front of my thighs ache. Sometimes my calves feel like they have hot electrodes sunk in them. It's never the same old, same old....but it does get old!
Life is a highway.... I am living a dream as I travel and explore our world. What will I find around the next corner?

Hip Hip Hooray!
As the most recent flare up started I sought out a Chiropractor. I hadn't had much relief from a gal I used a year ago, so I looked at recommendations online, further delved into at a few that bubbled up frequently, and chose Dr. O. I was impressed! The office runs efficiently and is managed by pleasant, efficient folks. As I had recent enough x-rays, I didn't need a new set. Dr. O performed a thorough exam and took a detailed history. Over the next few weeks I visited for adjustments, and accompanying massage torture sessions. The massage guy is also no-nonsense and gets right to the point....always finding 'those' spots and pressing, pushing and making me know the spots were there in his attempts to get the muscles to release. A few weeks ago Dr. O voiced his puzzlement about my issues and referred me to an orthopedic practice . I was impressed. IMHO Chiropractors generally feel physical health and well being is achieved through manipulation of the spine, not through other means. How refreshing when a doctor recognizes he has gone as far as he can with his practice, and suggests an alternative.
Today I visited the orthopedic office. Again, another amazingly smooth running practice. I barely had a chance to sit down and complete their new patient forms on a tablet before I was called in for an x-ray. I was returned to waiting area, and again, promptly called into an exam room. I saw the PA, and the doc, and was out of there.
And the outcome? Nothing definitive. It was kinda like going to the doctor 'cause you feel terrible, only to be told you have a virus and there is nothing to be done. The great news is that my hip sockets still have cartilage so a replacement is not part of the equation. Although it doesn't look like I have full-blown bursitis, it is possible that my bursa is somewhat inflamed, as is the area around the SI joint that is irritating the sciatic nerve. The doctor feels that the root of my problem are the existing issues in my lower back. The PA gave me a packet of exercises and stretches, I could probably have written the packet myself! However, to my credit, I had been doing them before everything blew up....but me being who I am...I may have been a little too aggressive in stretching and exercising. I was given a prescription for steroids to combat the inflammation, and a follow-up appointment in a month. If I am still having problems the orthopedists will look a bit further north in my body for answers.

Chiro-Crack-it
The Chiropractic Vet came to visit us the other day. I haven't used her before, but she was recommended by someone I respect. She was here for two hours, conducting chiropractic evaluations and adjustments as well as doing Coggin's tests and providing spring shots. The boys were thoroughly poked, prodded and inspected!
The exam began with an assessment of their gaits.
Forward and back at the walk and the trot.
Doc needed a bit of encouragement to trot.
(Remember that 'Slow' post?!!)
She literally went over each horse from tip to toe.
Here she's starting Doc's exam,
feeling vertebrae along his neck.
She also felt the neck as she asked each horse to
bend laterally left and right.
The Doctor 'Doc' was impressed with the horse 'Doc's' lateral flexibility!
Hooray for Clinton Anderson's influence in having me
ask for lateral flexion every time I ride!
Each section of the spine was assessed for
range of movement and possible pain.
Notes were taken;
(see the clipboard in the vet student's hands?)
Each hoof was wiggled in circles and the movement of bones was evaluated.
Here she is stretching the foreleg and the neck.
She commented that it was easy to get Pippin to do this...
He is so food-oriented, he was looking for a treat!
This led to an intriguing discussion.
I mentioned that because of Pippin's food obsession
we had thought that perhaps he was starved at some point in his life.
She considered that, but then offered that maybe he
had been an orphaned foal.
Hmmmm.... we will never know!
Pippin's not talking (or.... is he?!)
As she rotated the leg out, she commented,
"I bet you didn't know a horse's shoulder could move this way!"
She was right!
The Vet 'Doc' prescribed some exercises and stretches
for the horse 'Doc'.
for the horse 'Doc'.
His sciatic area on the right side is a bit stiff.
He seems to have a bit of a hitch in his giddy-up.
Here she demonstrates the exercise on Pippin:
The second step is to perform the same action
but bring the hoof back 'one step'.
Doc doesn't easily make 'circles' on his right side.
but bring the hoof back 'one step'.
Doc doesn't easily make 'circles' on his right side.
His hoof moves in ovals.
She said I could do this with both horses
as it does keep them supple.
The Doc 'Doc' moved on to adjustments.
In addition to the hoof circles,
she suggested three other exercises.
I have a lousy video of one of them below,
but it may help understand what she's asked me to do.
This is for Pippin who has some tightness
in the lumbar region of his spine:
What I'm supposed to do is hold him gently near the base of the tail with one hand. Then beginning at the withers, wiggle his back laterally, moving all the way down to his hips. You can kinda see it in the video. The Doc 'Doc' can really get the horses' backs wiggling. It looks very relaxing! The Doc 'Doc' was insistent that I practice under her supervision. Let me tell you, she makes it look really easy!
I'm also supposed to 'move' both horses backs vertically. I am to push up on their abdomen, just behind the girth area. She uses her finger tips and pushes, so the horses oppose the touch by pulling up until their spine is almost flat. Then, first, just behind their withers, I am to plant my fingers on the far side of the spine and gently, but firmly, push down and pull toward me. She suggested doing this four times on each side, moving down the spine and ending in front of the hips. The final exercise, for Doc, is to back slowly (easy peasy for Doc) and deliberately for 5 to 8 steps. This will help with the stiffness in his sacrum.
I was so pleased with the visit. Both boys have minor issues. The Doc 'Doc' explained that there are many, many horse owners out there that would wish their horses had the problems my horses have. I was amazed at how thoroughly she examined the boys, and the caring she exhibited. At the end, she gave each horse a cuddle and a pat or two. She did say that she loved Pippin's mustache... and thought both boys were just too darned cute! Awww, it makes a mama proud!

Doc Does Dance*
OK, Doc, let's begin with some warm-ups at the barre.
Stretch your leg.
Keep it straight.
No bending at the knee....
Point your toe...
That's good, but try to bring your head
D
O
W
N
to your toe.
Yes! That's it!
Excellent!
Now let's try elevés:
Bring your knee to the side...
You are doing so well, Doc.
Perfect toe point!
Let's move on to efface derriere.
Excellent!
Straighten your leg a bit more....
Don't forget to point that toe!
Perfect!
With just a little more work
you may be ready to audition for
the Joffrey Ballet.

Doc's Diatribe: Well Adjusted
One day a while back my Mrs. Owner took me to an arena for a riding lesson. I was feeling kinda lazy that day and just didn't want to walk in a 'cadenced' walk the way the lesson lady and my Mrs. Owner wanted me to. I just lumbered along. Ho hum. This is dumb. The lesson lady suggested that my Mrs. Owner might want to use spurs, or carry a crop....or, she commented, "maybe the horse is hurting." Well, I guess my Mrs. Owner has been worried that maybe I did hurt myself when I had my driving accident. So, she decided to take me to get adjusted.
You know, I'm a pretty steady fellow. I don't get upset by much. I thought I was well adjusted...not like Pippin, who is as squirrely as they come!
You know, I'm a pretty steady fellow. I don't get upset by much. I thought I was well adjusted...not like Pippin, who is as squirrely as they come!
My Mrs. Owner took me out of my paddock and then fussed at me about going into the big white box. I don't like the big white box. It makes a lot of noise. It wiggles under my feet. It worries me to hear all of the strange noises whirring by. I tried to tell my Mrs. Owner not to get into the box. I would not follow her. I would not put my foot up into the big white box. Unh uh. Not me. I backed up. My Mrs. Owner came out of the box. She asked me to go around in circles. I like going around in circles. My Mrs. Owner walked into the box again. Unh uh. Not me. I was asked to go around in more circles. Circles aren't that bad. Then I was asked to step into the box, again! Unh uh. No way, José. Never. More circles. Doesn't my Mrs. Owner think it is silly to have me go around and around and around? It does get a bit tiring. Well, you know, after doing this for a while I got tired of those circles. It seemed that if I was going to get any rest, I'd have to go stand in that box. That's what I finally did. I walked in there and stood. My Mrs. Owner made a big deal over me. She gave me treats. I felt better about being in the big white box.
We traveled up the bumpy road. We traveled down the turny road. We traveled on the fast road where you can hear all kinds of swishy noises. When we finally stopped and I got out of the box, there was a man I've never met.
He isn't the cookie guy who trims my feet.
He isn't the 'horse doctor guy who smells kinda scary'.
And we weren't at the lesson place.
Hmmm....
it looks like....
it must be....
Santa Claus!
So, Santa Claus watched me walk and trot. He said that my hips weren't even and one side was locked up. Locked up? The tack room gets locked up...but I don't see a lock on my hips!
Santa Clause poked me here and there.
He prodded and he pushed.
He jerked my leg and he yanked on my tail!
I shook myself, beginning at the tip of my nose
and working all the way down to my tail.
Ohhh, that felt good!
........
With a nod of his head
And a twist to his lip
He pronounced me adjusted
As he patted my hip.
He gathered his tools
Put them all in his sack,
And said that in a month
He wanted me to come back.
........
Now I know what Santa Claus does when he isn't driving his sleigh.
