I have made, and gifted, many quilts since I began the craft in 2016. Sometimes I wonder about a gifted quilt. Did the recipient like the gift? Did they use the gift? Did they appreciate the gift? Rarely does the sewist know. Rarely does one get any feedback.
Several years ago my son approached me about making a quilt for him. He first asked if I could repair a quilt he received from a girl friend years ago - sadly, many of the fabrics had disintegrated, and repairing it would have required remaking the quilt.
So, I began cutting and turning, twisting and trimming, and finally put together a quilt for my son. I do recall that the Mister and I FaceTimed when he went off on a foray for more fabrics for this quilt.
A few months later I visited my friend and we used her long arm machine to quilt my son's quilt.
So, that was 2019. Now....in 2025, my son tells me he has just purchased a new, synthetic blanket to replace the quilt I made him. He tells me that sadly, the quilt I made him has "bit the dust".
Well, it tells me that the quilt I made was well thought of, well loved and used....every day/night! This makes me proud to be a quilt maker!
Now...time to make another quilt for my dear son!
A couple of decades ago I had to throw out a quilt my grandma made for me when I was a kid. It was barely fabric anymore. It made me really sad to put it in the trash. The quilt you made was also well loved.
ReplyDeleteI recall a quilt we had as kids. When we were sick we were allowed to cuddle under the quilt. As I recall, it was wearing out when I went to college and it was a victim of my dad's minimalist views!
DeleteYes the well used ones do wear out! I have a number of quilts from my Mom...they are rarely used. I have one on a bed upstairs...that gets used maybe four times a year.
ReplyDeleteYou are lucky to have some of your mom's quilts. I enjoy looking at pieces my mother made, and it makes me feel closer to her. I have a few quilts that I rotate through on our bed, but except on the coldest nights, they are taken off when we sleep.
DeleteA lady who babysat for my mom and her sister, and then for me and my little brother made me a quilt from a bunch of different colors of satin. It was the prettiest thing I ever saw and I used it and used it and used it. Every stitch was hand-stitched, including the batting and backing. I finally tossed it about 10 years ago. Broke my heart. It had holes and was worn out in several spots and laundering it was out of the question.
ReplyDeleteI need to post a photo of it on my blog for you!!
I once bought a bunny that someone had made out of an old quilt. I'm thinking that I need to take my son's quilt (if he didn't toss it) and make him some sort of stuffie!
DeleteFound a pic and emailed it to you. I love that there are still people who make beautiful things. :)
ReplyDeleteGot it! Wow! The colors and fabric were stunning!
DeleteI'm almost happy when I see my gifts worn out. Much better than tucked into a closet!
