Pomaria

We have traveled through the state of SC for most of our adult lives. There are certain place names that make tickle me. Pomaria is one of them.

My mind makes me wonder, "just what did Maria do that forever after made people refer to her as Poor Maria?" (You may recall, SC is in "the" south and southern accents are part of the total package. The word "poor" might be pronounced "pō" - so that's my justification!)

Looking online I find that a local woman actually referred to the town as Po-Mary.  (If you can believe half of what you discover online!) Hmmmm, so I still wonder about that poor old gal!

The town looks like a place time has forgotten. It looks like many of the sad, basically abandoned towns we drive through in our travels. They always make me a bit blue, longing for that time when life was a bit slower and folks relied on their neighbors and townsfolk, forming close knit communities.

Some day maybe we can take a quick detour and see the town for ourselves!
