North Carolina welcomes drivers on I-26 with a view of the Appalachian mountains....well, the beginning edge of the ancient mountain chain. I have always enjoyed coming around a corner, and seeing this in front of me.
In reality, we have been climbing all day. We left the campground near Savannah, GA at an elevation of about 25 feet above sea level. By the time we reached Columbia, SC, we were close to 300 ft in elevation. As we passed Spartanburg we were at about 800 feet above sea level, and our campground for the week is at 1,190 feet. The highest point in the Appalachian mountain chain is about 30 miles from us as the crow flies. This is Mount Mitchell which is 6, 683 feet high. (Our first home in Colorado, which was on the front range, and not even in the mountains, was at an elevation of 7200 feet! We were always tickled that we lived at a greater elevation than the highest peak in the eastern us! )
And, we are climbing a bit more.
One lane highway, as if the roads up here aren't narrow enough!
No sooner had we cleared the one lane area, and turned onto the next road,
and this: more cones and a road with rock walls close to the corners,
(The Mister actually had to stop half way into this road as the crew had
placed construction cones at the turn making it too narrow for us to fit. I had to jump out,
Only a few more tight turns on a narrow road,
climbing up, with some drop-offs on the passenger side that have
always unnerved me!
We made it to the RV resort, began our way toward our lot,
and now this.
We meet a motorhome leaving the resort.
We are basically on a one lane road.
I got off the motorhome and chatted with the driver.
Since he was not towing a car behind him he agreed to
back into a nearby empty RV site.
So...we finally made it to our NC "home".
