This is the blurb that will be in our newsletter explaining the challenge:
This year’s quilt challenge is “The challenge of the States” in honor of our country’s 250th anniversary! Participants are asked to pick the name of one of our 50 states from a hat. They will have the opportunity to research that state.
- What is the state’s flower?
- What about the State bird?
- Is there a State quilt block or quilt?
- Are there colors associated with the state?
- What is the State song or motto and what designs does that inspire?
From there, participants will create an entry for display and judging (by attendees) at the annual Christmas party.
Entries may be any size and may be created using any quilting/fabric technique.
- Illinois is boring.
- I can't do Alabama.
- Is Mississippi a 'red' state? (I was very tempted to pull up a map on my phone to show her what color it was in the illustration 😂)
- I won't do Kansas, (and as she threw the state back into the hat), I'm not gonna do this unless I get a state I like.
- Yay! I got Texas! (She said as she pulled her hand out of the hat with nothing in it!)
Sound like a great project and hope everyone joins in.
ReplyDeleteIn about 1972, there was a song that started "50 nifty United States from 13 original colonies .." and goes on to name each state in alphabetical order. How do I know? The glee club in nursing school had to sing it. Oh, yes.
Hugs!
A Glee Club in nursing school? I guess you ladies didn't have enough to learn and had to learn more!!! Hahaha!
DeleteThey aren't playing fair. You get what you get. I'm a stickler, I know.
ReplyDeleteGood for you. I told the unsatisfied folks that they could see what was left and pick from the leftovers next month. That appeased a few of them.
DeleteSame, Sandra. The rules is the rules and if you don't like them, don't let the door hit you where the Good Lord split you.
DeleteDreaming, you offered up a great compromise. I get so disappointed when people behave poorly, especially when it's supposed to be something fun.
decades ago I decided to make a quilt with the state of Texas surrounded by some of the native flora and fauna. I had never made a quilt before. I chose old blue jeans for the state cutting each county out of dark or medium or faded depending on the ecosystem of which Texas has five major and more sub-major. I got about 2/3s, maybe more, of the state done before I abandoned the project altogether. In my defense I had two small children and my own etched glass studio starting to take off.
