A Quilt in a Day

I joined a new quilt guild in my community. I am now a member of the Citrus County Cracker Quilt Guild - that's a huge name for a small guild. I was member #64! My previous guild's numbers were in the high 300's. I'm looking forward to working with my new group, as I'll have the opportunity to get to know more of the members.

One of the committees puts together kits with everything needed to make a quilted throw for Veterans.

I was attracted to this project. A person could do as much as they wanted to do, and isn't required to return a finished quilt. I decided to complete the quilt, which, since the pieces are already cut, takes only three steps: piecing, quilting and binding.

This project is done in conjunction with a local hospice group. Because it is important for the Hospice group to know how many volunteer hours are involved in making able quilt, volunteers must keep track of their hours. I've never done that. I have no idea how much time I might spend working on a quilt, so it was interesting to see just how many hours of my time I volunteered for the quilt.

Believe it or not, adding up the 30 minutes here, and the hour there, over a span of 3 weeks, I worked a total of 12 hours! So, yes, a person can complete a throw-size quilt, albeit with a simple design, in a day - and still have time for meals and sleep!

  2. I am feeling more and more a part of the group, and part of the larger community. It made me feel fabulous to run into a sewing friend and have a brief conversation while I was out shopping. How nice to know someone (and remember her name) outside of the normal context.

  4. That's a beautiful quilt. I've never made a quilt, my ADHD likes projects that are easy and fast and don't require perfection. ;) Hope you make some good friends to hang out with!
