Destiny

I loved to play with parquetry blocks as a kid. I spent hours recreating the different patterns with all of those smooth, colorful, wooden blocks.

I guess that's why I enjoy making quilts!

  1. The quilts are wonderful. I just don't have the patience to make, but it takes no effort at all to admire them and appreciate the work that goes into each one.

I have a huge bin of pattern blocks on our art cart. Once in awhile the kids get them out and spend a couple afternoons obsessively creating. Found some made with thick fun foam at Goodwill, I gave them tacky glue, paper plates and the whole big bag to create permanent designs. It was great.

    1. I'm in the same boat, Ami. I truly appreciate all of the skill and effort it takes to make a quilt, but I do not have the patience to even attempt one. Dreaming's quilts are gorgeous!

  2. Thanks for the nice words. I am actually ADHD to the max...what I like about quilting is that I can work on one aspect of it for a bit, then do another part of the task. Of course, I also have several projects going at a time!

I used to read "Grandfather Tang's Story" to my math students. I had tangram pieces in different colored plexiglass so I could illustrate each of Grandfather Tang's design. This lead to a discussion of the different shapes and angles. Then they'd follow my instructions for cutting a square into tangram pieces, reinforcing the shape/angle discussion. We'd have challenges to see who could reconstruct their tangrams into a square, then they could create their own design and write about it. I loved teaching when you could spend a bit more time on a lesson and incorporate discovery and hands-on activities, instead of quickly going through the standards required for my students.

    1. Oh, thank you! I had so much fun designing that one - I started out with one idea and it kept morphing into something else entirely.
