H is for Hilton Head and Huge

(Through the month of April I will be participating in the A to Z Blogger Challenge. Each day my post will be inspired by successive letters of the alphabet.  My A to Z Blog Challenge topics are inspired by our recent 90-day trip on our motorhome. Click here to see links to other responses to this challenge.)

H is for Hilton Head and Huge!!

The campgrounds on Hilton Head Island, SC are among the nicest we have visited. Each of the sites, at the two different campgrounds, is privately owned, and throughout the years owners have added various upgrades. Some sites have waterfalls. Others have built-in fire pits with nice seating. Some sites have pavers or concrete overlays. Beautiful plantings screen one site from another.

I suppose one can't really call this sort of thing 'camping'!

For us, Hilton Head is not about the beach, golfing, shopping or tennis - of which there is plenty. It is about friends. We used to live just off of Hilton Head, so when we come back to this part of the country, we connect with our former neighbors, colleagues and acquaintances. We always have a wonderful time. But, our community, just over the bridge is hardly recognizable as the sleepy little place we moved to 40 years ago. It has grown. It is out of control. The traffic is abominable. Buildings sprout up, practically overnight. Forests are razed for new developments. More people come. It is huge!

And, speaking of 'huge' - this A to Z challenge is also huge! At last count, there were 1891 participants, of which I am #1485. That's a lot of bloggers out there, madly typing away each day, trying to come up with something for each letter of the alphabet.... and still wondering just what they will post for Q and X!

  3. H = halfway through spring and rapidly heading into summer!

HHI is a great place to visit but not someplace I want to live! Ditto Bluffton, which has changed so much in the past 10-15 years. IMHO, driving 25+ minutes to "big box" stores, e.g. Target, is a small price to pay to avoid living amid all the development.

  4. Huge? By my standards, not by a long short. You can ride your bike almost everywhere, which means it's not huge. Everything I've seen, visited, and read about Hilton Head is about it's preservation not destruction. I've not seen forest being razed. In fact, thing so much amongst the forests they're hard to find. We love it there. Been there 5 times so far with another trip already planned. On our list of places to retire too...at the top.

  5. If there are more than two cars on the highway that is huge to me. In 40 years things change..I have never been there but if there is lots of traffic perhaps I'll pass:)

  7. You are so right about Hilton Head striving to keep the island pristine. I guess I didn't make it clear that I was talking about the area just off of Hilton Head. That is where the huge growth has taken place in the last 15 - 20 years.
